The core debate is shifting from Can AI code? to What happens to junior talent and core engineering mastery when the inner loop (coding/unit testing) is mostly automated?
As engineering leaders, how are you rewriting hiring profiles, onboarding, and promotion paths to value system architecture, complex debugging, and prompt-based governance over raw coding speed? If AI handles the boilerplate, are we risking a generation of engineers who can’t fix a low-level memory leak without a prompt?
We saw this with outsourced boilerplate; now it’s an AI. My best senior engineers spend 10% of their time writing new code and 90% fixing the system design debt. Copilot generates a nice CRUD layer, but it can’t fix the Kafka cluster after a massive traffic spike. We’re prioritizing architectural review skills, not keystrokes.
This is a huge net positive. The future job is orchestration, not execution. I want my junior devs spending their time on novel problems and learning cloud cost optimization, not fighting with YAML. We need to measure impact on the business, which AI unlocks by removing the low-value drag.
The goal isn’t better engineering; it’s maximizing output for the same headcount. The company will automate the boring stuff, then lay off the juniors. New engineers will be “prompt monkeys” managing the AI’s output, never learning the fundamentals. Then, when the AI breaks the build in a non-obvious way, we’ll all be stuck.
The risk is clear: competency debt. We’re shifting our L&D budget heavily towards LLM governance and security-by-design. We’ve already observed faster coding speed but a significant uptick in subtle security flaws generated by AI models. We need engineers who are skeptical auditors of the AI’s code, not just grateful consumers.
