The LLM Reviewer: Is it a partner or a crutch? The latest studies show AI-assisted code review leads to less emotional regulation, fewer conflicts! but can increase cognitive load due to excessive, non-contextual feedback (Alami & Ernst, 2025). Where do you draw the line? Are we optimizing for a faster ‘LGTM’ or for a genuinely better codebase and a stronger, more skilled team? What’s the biggest non-technical risk you’ve seen when an LLM is your primary reviewer?

You guys are getting paid to think? My lead just auto-approves anything Copilot touched. It’s a liability shield. The actual human review time dropped from 4 hours to 4 minutes. No one cares about ‘better codebase,’ they care about ‘faster burnout.’ This is just the next evolution of that.

This is the obvious trade-off. We outsourced boilerplate years ago. Now we’re outsourcing thinking. Managers love the faster check-ins, but give it a year, and the codebases will be brittle monuments to prompt engineering. The context an LLM misses is the soul of the system.

Stop using it for the “big” architecture review. Use it for PR description generation, boilerplate tests, and catching style violations. It frees me up to actually focus on the 10% of the diff that impacts performance or domain logic. It’s a glorified linter that speaks English, and that’s a huge win.
